Abstract
The national anthem "Inno di Mameli" translated into the Italian sign language: a linguistic analysis
The Italian deaf community, which can be likened to many alloglot communities in the linguistic "space" of Italy, will without doubt recognize itself in the traditional idea of "Italian nation", however, the Italian deaf people consider themselves an independent community, not belonging to a territory, but with a common sentiment, historical and linguistic, associated with the Italian Sign Language (LIS). As part of this particular linguistic and cultural situation, several "translations" of the Italian national anthem have been produced over the years. Using two of these translations, we intend to analyze the relationship with the original hymn of Mameli, with an examination of the linguistic, stylistic and rhetorical aspects, i.e.: 1) adopting old-fashioned concepts and expressions; 2) restoring in LIS a text composed in a written and poetic language; 3) transposing epic rhythm and music in a visual-gestural language. The linguistic analysis, conducted on the basis of movies in LIS, transcribed with SignWriting in use at the ISTC-CNR of Rome, are based on a series of performances in LIS made in institutional settings, compared with the original text and related to other poems in LIS celebrating the sense of belonging and identity - linguistic identity in particular - of the Italian deaf community.
