Effects of Oscillatory Shear Flow on Chain-like Cluster Dynamics in Ferrofluids without Magnetic Fields

, and . Abstract Book of the XXIII IUPAP International Conference on Statistical Physics, Genova, Italy, (9-13 July 2007)

Abstract

Brownian dynamics simulations of interacting magnetic particles in a quasi-dimensional ferrofluid system are performed under the influence of oscillatory shear flow in the absence of external magnetic fields. Starting from chain-like clusters of the particles, we study the time-dependent behavior of both magnetization and microstructures of the ferrofluid by changing values of two parameters, the shear rate strength and frequency of oscillatory shear flow. Simulation results show that there are three different dynamical regimes for the chain clusters dynamics, depending on these two parameters. Scaling behavior of the asymptotic magnetization is also observed for a certain range of parameters.
