The paper presents a case study of a system of protection of 400 kv OHL transmission tower against potential
disaster by soil erosion due to sudden change of Narmada River stream in Gujarat. During execution of
the project the Anchor tower of river crossing section was about 100 m away from river bank. But after
completion of the line it was found that in every monsoon the river stream was shifting closure to the Anchor
tower location and one of the river crossing tower which was in flowing river during execution was found to
be outside the main stream of river. The line was transmitting power from Gandhar to Hazira, exclusively
for large steel plant and any damage to tower & disruption of line would have incurred huge loss. Authors
visited the site, studied the reason for soil erosion & suggested the solution after studying the various options
to protect the tower.
