Аннотация

A closer examination of Adorno’s exile in the US, and particularly in Los Angeles in the 1940s, defies the popular view of him as a cantankerous anti-American Eurocentric snob. Rather, his writings and personal letters show how Adorno saw his time in California, the hothouse of the West’s most advanced culture industry, as an opportunity to scrutinize the modern condition. For Adorno, however, this did not have to be a bleak business. Instead, rigorous critique the way Adorno understood it did not mean to put the joys of life on hold and sideline the project of liberation but, on the contrary, to advance it by asserting its emancipatory promise that only pleasure can sustain.
