An understanding of factors leading to retention of students continues as a primary concern for strategic planners at tuition-driven colleges and universities since the expenditure of limited capital resources on inefficient and ineffective projects and programs can lead to financial distress. Student retention depends upon a student's persistence (motivation) to remain at a chosen college or university through graduation. This dissertation seeks to determine if selected variables at a small, private college in Northeastern Pennsylvania are important elements along the path from the student's acceptance at the college to the student's persistence to graduation.
