Abstract
The subject of thermodynamics is introduced with
emphasis on non-equilibrium processes. Traditional
equilibrium material is not developed as fully since
the book assumes some acquaintance with it. Topics
covered include: basic concepts; the first and second
laws of thermodynamics; entropy in the realm of
chemical reactions; extremum principles and general
thermodynamic relations; basic thermodynamics of
gases, liquids and solids; phase change; solutions;
chemical transformations; fields and internal degrees
of freedom; thermodynamics of radiation; the Gibbs
stability theory; critical phenomena and
configurational heat capacity; stability and
fluctuations based on entropy production;
non-equilibrium thermodynamics --- the foundations;
non-equilibrium thermodynamics --- the linear regime;
non-equilibrium stationary states and their stability
--- linear regime; non-linear thermodynamics;
dissipative structures, and future outlook. Appendices
include standard thermodynamic properties and physical
constants.
