At least in Acer and in Salix, there are two competing biochemical processes by living cells of the xylem: secretion (efflux) and absorption (influx) of sugars, with temperature determining which is the dominant process. At low temperatures, efflux dominates. The starch that is stored in parenchyma cells in the xylem is hydrolyzed to sucrose, which is then secreted by contact cells into the xylem sap (Sauter 1980).
