Based on the premise that directions of graduate education are based in large measure on the economic realities of the market for trained professionals in the field, this essay explores salary trends and changes in demand for various areas of specialization as they are reflected in the positions listed in the monthly Bulletin of the SCA Placement Service from August, 1966, through July, 1978. An examination of the data produced by this research will help us understand the present status of the discipline, position ourselves to grasp opportunities for long-term growth or development, and protect ourselves from the hazards of an uncertain future.
