The merging solves optimality flaws (action redundancy), to generate better plans, and consistency flaws (open conditions, causal-link, and parallel step redundancy flaws), to generate valid plans. Allows for a set of actions to collectively replace a single redundant action. Defines coupling as the amount of interaction between agents, and exploits loose coupling for computational efficiency. Efficient for uncoupled and loosely couple tasks. Prior plan merging method do not benefit from loose task coupling. Tightly-coupled tasks introduce exponentially many ordering constraints. Offers a centralized and a distributed version of the method. The centralized method is a complex algorithm involving a depth first search nested inside a best first search over the space of plans and flagging ordering constraints between each plan's actions. Constraint optimization techniques to solve the distributed version of the method. The centralized method is faster than the decentralized one.
