Abstract

The Philippines is a country in Southeast Asia which is noted for having a highly educated developing economy. Its educational system has passed through various stages of development and undergone major evolution. At present, it embarks on major educational reform programs to bring about quality, accessible, relevant, and an efficient educational system. The current reforms are implemented by the three education bodies namely: the Department of Education (DepED) for basic education; the Technical Skills and Development Authority (TESDA) governing mid-level skills training; and the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) overseeing the higher and postgraduate education. The Philippine educational system is noted to have the one of shortest cycles of basic education, that is, 10 years (as compared to other Asia Pacific countries such as Japan, Singapore, Brunei Darussalam, and Hong Kong).
