Italo-romance etymology and dictionaries: a difficult relationship
F. Crevatin. International Journal of Lexicography, (2004)
Abstract
This is a presentation for non-specialists of some of the issues raised by Italo-Romance etymology. Etymological dictionaries available for the Italian domain (national language and dialects) are introduced, but the largest part of this paper is devoted to reviewing the principal tools and methods available in modern etymological research and indirectly shows why etymological information in general Italian dictionaries is forcedly bound to be one of the weakest parts of the lexicographic article.
