What is missing from these studies is some sort of user studyon how effective these techniques are; it is so useless to make these great looking visualizations and then not back up your claims with any empirical evidence that they're useful. - two perspectives- laying the data out, and then navigating it - hyperbolic layouts using non-Euclidean geometries - visualizing knowledge-bases seem a particularly difficult subet, since these structures are unusally connected and each node has a high degree of connectedness - measured by ratio E/V edges to vertices - see Furnas and Bederson paper on zooming with space-scale diagrams - navigation techniques: ? pan and zoom (semantic) ? focus+context (fisheye) - semantic f+c might mean certain nodes disappear ? clustering similar nodes (and perhaps removing a particular cluster) -structure-based - content-based (difficult to make this domain independent - SemNet sematic clustering - Node metrics paperslook very useful particularly [11][127] ? incremental exploration and navigation - logical frames of view that the user controls, with new elements added and subrtracted as appropriate (animated context swapping).
