Photosynthesis is strongly affected by temperature. Contasting habitats show genotypic variation and phenotypic plasticity. Variable between species. Plants from habitats with great oC variation won?t necc. Have a broader temperature range of good photosynthetic performance or tolerance at any one time but tend to have a higher potential for thermal acclimation of Ps so they can shift their good Ps temperature range with the seasons. Characteristics are influenced by the previous history of the plant. Cool environments = higher psic rates at low temperatures. Psic optima occur at lower temperatures. This is largely because of differences in the heat stability of psic apparatus. Reversible and irreversible inhibition. Temperature responbse curves are generally rather similar in shape, but optima shift with growth temperature/habitat. Rates differ between species too. ?acclimation potential?? is genetic. In cold environments: higher optimum than the mean/usual/prevailing daily leaf temperature. Indicates that the maximum psic effectiveness is lower than the optimum photosynthesis because of TRADEOFFS. Optimum temperature for photosynthesis may rise with higher growth temperature, but the RATE might still drop. This means no acclimation. This often happens in plants native to cool environments. Large seasonal variation eg. Temperate shrubs large acclimation potential. Plants from the cold have lower preferred temperatures, and limited potential to acclimate to higher temperatures. Things that can become limiting: Stomatal conductance: CO2 supply (saturate?) Light (Make sure it?s saturating?)
