Une passion de l’égalité particulièrement insatiable en France

Abstract

For opinions in a majority of countries in the world, wage inequality is rising, and contributes to forming an unjust society, while at the same time globalization increases the gap between rich and poor countries. This perception of inequalities and their evolution is not necessarily in line with the levels or movements of these inequalities as revealed by the usual statistical indices applied nationally. In France, it is considered more than elsewhere that income inequalities are too large, although they are in the average of the countries studied by the OECD. Where inequalities are high, as in the United States, they are found low. France is characterized overall by a very strong “passion for equality” which is explained by the difference between an egalitarian ideal of social justice (common to all countries) and this perception of inequality higher than elsewhere
