Abstract

From the beginning of the last century several theoretical and experimental studies have been devoted to the analysis of the dynamics of liquid flow into a capillary, and different regimes have been identified. In particular, in the asymptotic long-time limit, the celebrated Washburn regime is recovered: the liquid front moves proportionally to the square root of the time. Results of extensive two-phase Lattice Boltzmann simulations of capillary filling of two-dimensional microchannels are reported here. The domain of validity of the Washburn regime is inspected and critically compared with experimental data. A good match between the simulation results and the predicted theoretical behaviour is obtained in the long-time limit. Finally, the influence of various physical parameters and different geometrical constraints has been evaluated.
