Abstract

Are shock waves reversible? Despite the wide range of investigation in nonlinear fiber optics and the general theory of nonlinear waves, until now we could not answer to this intriguing and fundamental question. In this chapter, the time asymmetric behavior of optical shock waves in nonlinear nonlocal media is presented. The introduction of exponentially decaying eigenstates, called Gamow vectors, allows answering to this irreversibility problem. Our novel theoretical approach unveils new features as decay rates quantization and non-classical states generation. Furthermore, we report on squeezing of light during shock excitation and present the expected experimental signatures of this squeezing dynamics.
