Abstract

Many space plasmas scenarios display fast reconnection processes, the comprehension of which is still under debate. All the traditional scenarios attempting to describe magnetic reconnection assume that the plasma taking part to the process may be described via a mass distribution almost everywhere analytical. In this work, we instead explore the consequences of assuming that the distribution of the plasma involved is an irregular measure. The magnetic reconnection rate is calculated accordingly via an application of fractional calculus in the framework of resistive MHD, and shows new features that seem to be very much pointing towards a faithful representation of the reconnection phenomenology. The authors interpret these results as suggesting a wide use of fractional calculus in the space plasma processes, with theoretical motivations.
