Abstract

Basic formulae are derived for the step response of a series RC circuit in which both the resistance and capacitance are non-linear. The initial condenser voltage is assumed arbitrary, and a careful distinction is made between the charging and discharging cases. A detailed treatment is given for the case where the resistance and capacitance are described by power law functions. Recursion formulae are presented which simplify the computation of the capacitor-voltage versus time relations. Graphs of the latter relations are given for the cases of a linear capacitor, an abrupt junction diode, and a graded junction diode. The results extend the relations given by Schulz and Lin.
