Abstract

The expansion’s reasons of a new divinity constitute a source of questions for the Historians in order to understand why a god can be more or less accepted by the population of a country. Sarapis is a good example of this fact. He was born in Egypt with Greek characters after the death of Alexander the Great and his cult has grown up as early as the beginning of the third century, not only beside the people of Egypt, but also beside the cities of Greece. The subject of this article is to analyze the testimonies of this expansion and to summarize the conditions which allowed it. The attitude of the Ptolemies in this context is studied as well as the question of their interventionism.
