- (private-note)Apoplastic freezing can also disrupt the vital processes of xylem transport (Zimmermann 1983) Pb must at a minimum exceed the vapor pressure of water (Pwv)for the bubble to dissolve (how much greater depends on the air content of the bobble and the surrounding sap; Yang and Tyree 1992) There are those plants that cavitate extensively, are deciduous, and then fix it all up later (sperry and Sullivan 1992; sperry et al, 1994, Hacke and Sauter 1996, Ewers 1995) Cut branches off plants, recut under water. Max hydraulic conductivity before stress, then immediately after. Flow rate without a pressure head as control. Purified filtered water used. (*how might this affect results? How concentrated is the xylem sap?) specific conductivity = maximum (flushed) conductivity divided by the stem transverse area. 0.25oC/min cooling rate. min temperature -12 to -15oC. Exotherms around -2 to -6oC. thawing 0.45oC/min. (*People quote the mean diameter, but that doesn't really say much. How about variation around the mean? If there's heaps, then mean conductivity is going to be waaaay higher than if there isn't heaps, because even a few big vessels is a mega huge change in conductivity) the cavitation diameter should be near 45um. *shouldn't this depend on vessel tension? An observed 30um diameter above which very sensitive. (at -0.5MPa). PLC associated with any arbitrarily chosen cavitation diameter(dc) = 100((1-sum(d greater or equal to dc)^4)/sum of all diameters^4 In a non-transpiring intact plant or branch, the pressure in the liquid should increase while ice is forming because of the expansion of ice (Robson and Petty 1987)* But how about the osmotic potential of freezing ice? Ewers 1995 predicted 49um Centripetal ice formation has been observed in sucoff 1969, Robson, McHardy and Petty 1988)
