- (private-note)Codominant shrubs R. laurina: - larger vessel diameters -xylem diameter twice as large as C. megacarpus (40 to 80 vs 21 to 42 um) - deep root system - large basal burl that resprouting comes from (after fire or freezing injury) - reducing freeze/thaw rates had no effect on embolism (too sensitive) - occurs in COLDER places (microsites, hither altitudes) than does C. megacarpus! -more sensitive to dehydration. No influence of dehydration on freezing embolism (too sensitive) -lt50 (50\% leaf cell death) happened at a lower temperature than did the ice nucleation temperature (-5 vs -3.6), and they conclude from this that embolism might be more of an issue. C. megacarpus: - narrow d vessels - shallow roots - non-resprouter. no burl. - reduced freeze/thaw rates (more natural rates) reduced \% embolism - water stress had an effect on \% embolism - nadir temperature didn't have a significant effect drought-frost interactions explored ("drought" meant drying the branches on a bench for a few days) vital staining techniques Lab cooling of twigs in buckets of water. The rate of cooling was 0.08oC per minute to 0oC, and then 0.02oC per minute down to -20oC. The warming rate was 0.08oC per minute from -20 to 15oC thaw rate varied for C. megacarpus (the other one was too embolised at any thaw rate).33.66, 1.25 and 2.5 oC per minute nadir temperature effects on hydrated C. megacarpus also investigated.-5 to -20oC Branches collected between May and August (does this mean unacclimated?) lo gullo and salleo found nadir temperature to have an effect, but sperry et al 94 didn't. Pockman and sperry also did.
