The French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu died in the evening of January 23, 2002. This article discusses three reasons why biblical scholars should read the works of Bourdieu. (1) In his work ‘Le sens pratique’ Bourdieu claims that the starting point of critical science is the self-objectivation and self-reflection of the work of the scientist. Biblical exegesis however often lacks self criticism of its own cultural and social presuppositions. (2) The critique contained in ‘L'ontologie politique de Martin Heidegger’ is not only important because of Heidegger's influence on biblical hermeneutics, but also because it is an excellent example of rhetorical criticism. (3) Finally, in his already classical work ‘La distinction’ Bourdieu describes taste and cultural distinction as means of power and social differentiation. The influence of style on social domination is often neglected in biblical social history on the one hand and biblical stylistics on the other hand.
