Abstract

The rules governing cell division and differentiation are central to understanding the mechanisms of development, aging and cancer. However, since it is not possible to track the fate of cells individually, resolving these rules in vivo is a challenging enterprise. By utilising inducible genetic labelling, recent studies have shown that families of cells (clones) can be tracked in transgenic mouse epidermis in vivo. Drawing on these results, we describe how clonal fate data may be used to infer the laws of cell division and access the mechanism of murine epidermal homeostasis 1. \\ 1) Nature 446, 185-189 (2007)
