Abstract

The retarding potential difference technique has been used to measure the reflection of electrons normally incident on each of three clean tungsten single crystal faces and on these faces when covered with adsorbed \CO\ or Cs. The reflection near zero primary energy for the clean tungsten (110) face was found to be near 40%. Strong structure was found in the reflected spectra which changed markedly with gas adsorption. The structure is interpreted as caused by the interference of the electron waves multiply scattered by the surface layers.
