- (private-note)We found significant differences (P,0.001) between the four stands, mainly caused by a shift to smaller tracheid cross-sectional sizes at the highest altitudes (P,0.001): Also more loss of conductivity at higher altitudes WOO Can read again more carefully VERY IMPORTANT PAPER... altitude caused.... increasing drought stress decreasing conduit cross-sectional area, distribution skewed to the smaller size classes decreased vulnerability threshold to lower water potentials (vulnerability curves) greater PLC Sperry and Robson (2001) conclude from inter- and intra-specific comparisons that freeze-thaw induced cavitation does not occur in tracheids smaller than 30 mm in diameter, which is the case for the investigated xylem cross-sections.
