Creating sites that truly meet the needs and expectations of the wide range of online users is quite another story. In Designing Web Usability: The Practice of Simplicity, renowned Web usability guru Jakob Nielsen shares his insightful thoughts on the subject. Packed with annotated examples of actual Web sites, this book sets out many of the design precepts all Web developers should follow.

This guide segments discussions of Web usability into page, content, site, and intranet design. This breakdown skillfully isolates for the reader many subtly different challenges that are often mixed together in other discussions. For example, Nielsen addresses the requirements of viewing pages on varying monitor sizes separately from writing concise text for "scanability." Along the way, the author pulls no punches with his opinions, using phrases like "frames: just say no" to immediately make his feelings known. Fortunately, his advise is some of the best you'll find.

One of the unique aspects of this title is the use of actual statistics to buttress the author's opinions on various techniques and technologies. He includes survey results on sizes of screens, types of queries submitted to search portals, response times by connection type and more. This book is intended as the first of two volumes--focusing on the "what." The author promises a follow-up title that will show the "hows" and, based on this installation, we can't wait.

He asserts that the public secondary school educational system in the U.S.A. fails to impart to students a sense of visual awareness strong enough to engage with images they encounter. He considers the history of visual education at Harvard, and asserts that it was lacking and describes teaching students who are unaccustomed to analyzing visual information for long periods of time. He details a forthcoming book of his in which he analyzes the deficiencies of visual education, and prescribes improvements. He discusses the History of Landscape, his professorial title. He scrutinizes a given viewer's biases of perception, and concludes by affirming that the demands of global culture will necessitate change in educational practices.</swrc:abstract><swrc:author><rdf:Seq><rdf:_1><swrc:Person swrc:name="Steven Heller"/></rdf:_1></rdf:Seq></swrc:author></rdf:Description></burst:publication>

A collection of visual thesauri for browsing large collections of geographic images

<dc:subject>geography thesauri images </dc:subject>
Marshall C. Ramsey and Hsinchun Chen and Bin Zhu and Bruce R. Schatz Journal of the American Society for Information Science(2000)
<taxo:topics><rdf:Bag><rdf:li rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/tag/geography"/><rdf:li rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/tag/thesauri"/><rdf:li rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/tag/images"/></rdf:Bag></taxo:topics><burst:publication><rdf:Description rdf:about="http://www.bibsonomy.org/bibtex/268cd4caadf07ac565f966e7e2e0dc572/paregorios"><owl:sameAs rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/uri/bibtex/268cd4caadf07ac565f966e7e2e0dc572/paregorios"/><rdf:type rdf:resource="http://swrc.ontoware.org/ontology#Article"/><owl:sameAs rdf:resource="http://www3.interscience.wiley.com/cgi-bin/fulltext/62003216/PDFSTART"/><swrc:date>Fri Aug 29 17:52:45 CEST 2008</swrc:date><swrc:journal>Journal of the American Society for Information Science</swrc:journal><swrc:pages>826-834</swrc:pages><swrc:title>A collection of visual thesauri for browsing large collections of geographic images</swrc:title><swrc:volume>50</swrc:volume><swrc:year>2000</swrc:year><swrc:keywords>geography thesauri images </swrc:keywords><swrc:abstract>Digital libraries of geo-spatial multimedia content are currently deficient in providing fuzzy, concept-based retrieval mechanisms to users. The main challenge is that indexing and thesaurus creation are extremely labor-intensive processes for text documents and especially for images. Recently, 800,000 declassified satellite photographs were made available by the United States Geological Survey. Additionally, millions of satellite and aerial photographs are archived in national and local map libraries. Such enormous collections make human indexing and thesaurus generation methods impossible to utilize. However, relatively few studies have been conducted on how students’ understanding of the rigorous definition of limit is influenced by the images of limit that the students have constructed through their previous learning. This study explored how calculus students’ images of the limit of a sequence influence their understanding of definitions of the limit of a sequence. In a series of task-based interviews, students evaluated the propriety of statements describing the convergence of sequences through a specially designed hands-on activity, called the ɛ–strip activity. This paper illustrates how these students’ understanding of definitions of the limit of a sequence was influenced by their images of limits as asymptotes, cluster points, or true limit points. The implications of this study for teaching and learning the concept of limit, as well as on research in mathematics education, are also discussed.</swrc:abstract><swrc:author><rdf:Seq><rdf:_1><swrc:Person swrc:name="Kyeong Hah Roh"/></rdf:_1></rdf:Seq></swrc:author></rdf:Description></burst:publication>

Imagesemantics: User-Generated Metadata, Content Based Retrieval \& Beyond

<dc:subject>DISS tagging images tagging_convergence modelling </dc:subject>
M. Spaniol and R. Klamma and M. Lux Proceedings of I-Semantics '07, (2007)
<taxo:topics><rdf:Bag><rdf:li rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/tag/DISS"/><rdf:li rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/tag/tagging"/><rdf:li rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/tag/images"/><rdf:li rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/tag/tagging_convergence"/><rdf:li rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/tag/modelling"/></rdf:Bag></taxo:topics><burst:publication><rdf:Description rdf:about="http://www.bibsonomy.org/bibtex/264d0702dbf0f43e0cae2677d859a607e/michael"><owl:sameAs rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/uri/bibtex/264d0702dbf0f43e0cae2677d859a607e/michael"/><rdf:type rdf:resource="http://swrc.ontoware.org/ontology#InProceedings"/><swrc:date>Wed Aug 13 11:00:11 CEST 2008</swrc:date><swrc:booktitle>Proceedings of I-Semantics '07</swrc:booktitle><swrc:title>Imagesemantics: User-Generated Metadata, Content Based Retrieval

An image repository would become a costly and meaningless data graveyard without descriptive metadata. We adapted EPrints, a conventional repository software system, to create a biological research image repository for a local research group, in order to publish images with structured metadata with a minimum of development effort. However, in its native installation, this repository cannot easily be linked with information from third parties, and the user interface has limited flexibility. We address these two limitations by providing Semantic Web access to the contents of this image repository, causing the image metadata to become programmatically accessible through a SPARQL endpoint and enabling the images and their metadata to be presented in more flexible faceted browsers, jSpace and Exhibit. We show the feasibility of publishing image metadata on the Semantic Web using existing tools, and examine the inadequacies of the Semantic Web browsers in providing effective user interfaces. We highlight the importance of a loosely coupled software framework that provides a lightweight solution and enables us to switch between alternative components.</swrc:abstract><swrc:author><rdf:Seq><rdf:_1><swrc:Person swrc:name="Jun Zhao"/></rdf:_1><rdf:_2><swrc:Person swrc:name="Graham Klyne"/></rdf:_2><rdf:_3><swrc:Person swrc:name="David Shotton"/></rdf:_3></rdf:Seq></swrc:author><swrc:editor><rdf:Seq><rdf:_1><swrc:Person swrc:name="Manfred Hauswirth"/></rdf:_1><rdf:_2><swrc:Person swrc:name="Manolis Koubarakis"/></rdf:_2><rdf:_3><swrc:Person swrc:name="Sean Bechhofer"/></rdf:_3></rdf:Seq></swrc:editor></rdf:Description></burst:publication>

Image Retrieval: Ideas, Influences, and Trends of the New Age

Content Based Image Retrieval CBIR Survey Paper - 2008

<dc:subject>ir survey images retrieval </dc:subject>
Ritendra Datta and Dhiraj Joshi and Jia Li and James Z. Wang ACM Computing Surveys(2008)
<taxo:topics><rdf:Bag><rdf:li rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/tag/ir"/><rdf:li rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/tag/survey"/><rdf:li rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/tag/images"/><rdf:li rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/tag/retrieval"/></rdf:Bag></taxo:topics><burst:publication><rdf:Description rdf:about="http://www.bibsonomy.org/bibtex/2278a48194bc9afbd298c36dd497a9821/hotho"><owl:sameAs rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/uri/bibtex/2278a48194bc9afbd298c36dd497a9821/hotho"/><rdf:type rdf:resource="http://swrc.ontoware.org/ontology#Article"/><owl:sameAs rdf:resource="http://infolab.stanford.edu/~wangz/project/imsearch/review/JOUR/"/><swrc:date>Wed Apr 30 21:25:36 CEST 2008</swrc:date><swrc:journal>ACM Computing Surveys</swrc:journal><swrc:number>2</swrc:number><swrc:title>Image Retrieval: Ideas, Influences, and Trends of the New Age</swrc:title><swrc:volume>40</swrc:volume><swrc:year>2008</swrc:year><swrc:keywords>ir survey images retrieval </swrc:keywords><swrc:abstract>We have witnessed great interest and a wealth of promise in content-based image retrieval as an emerging technology. While the last decade laid foundation to such promise, it also paved the way for a large number of new techniques and systems, got many new people involved, and triggered stronger association of weakly related fields. In this paper, we survey almost 300 key theoretical and empirical contributions in the current decade related to image retrieval and automatic image annotation, and discuss the spawning of related sub-fields in the process. We also discuss significant challenges involved in the adaptation of existing image retrieval techniques to build systems that can be useful in the real-world. In retrospect of what has been achieved so far, we also conjecture what the future may hold for image retrieval research.</swrc:abstract><swrc:author><rdf:Seq><rdf:_1><swrc:Person swrc:name="Ritendra Datta"/></rdf:_1><rdf:_2><swrc:Person swrc:name="Dhiraj Joshi"/></rdf:_2><rdf:_3><swrc:Person swrc:name="Jia Li"/></rdf:_3><rdf:_4><swrc:Person swrc:name="James Z.
