Pekka Mäkelä. Introduction to Consolidative Consumption Hyödykkeiden tuotannossa tavoitteena on jatkuvasti parantaa tuottavuutta. Tässä tarkoituksessa tuotantovälineiden käyttöaste pyritään pitämään mahdollisimman korkeana. Yleisesti hyväksytyn käsityksen mukaan kulutustavaroiden ja palvelujen varsinainen tarkoitus on tuottaa hyvinvointia niiden käyttäjille. Hyödykkeiden eli kulutusvälineiden käyttöaste on kuitenkin jäänyt alhaiseksi. Kuluttajiksi määritettyjen kansalaisten moraaliseksi velvollisuudeksi on asetettu käyttökelpoistenkin tavaroiden sysääminen syrjään alati muuntuvien uutuuksien tieltä. The possibility of change assumes, in my opinion, practices carried out in the spirit of concrete utopia as presented by Ernst Bloch. For the development of such practices, the group representing consumers calling out for a change needs a theory of critical praxis. My conclusion, in sum, is to propose an updating of the key concepts of economy from the perspective of consumption. Not just consumption but economy as a whole needs to be reconceptualized.
Vivek Chibber, author of Postcolonial Theory and the Specter of Capital: "A typical maneuver of postcolonial theorists is to say something like this: Marxism relies on abstract, universalizing categories. But for these categories to have traction, reality should look exactly like the abstract descriptions of capital, of workers, of the state, etc. But, say the postcolonial theorists, reality is so much more diverse. Workers wear such colorful clothes; they say prayers while working; capitalists consult astrologers — this doesn’t look like anything what Marx describes in Capital. So it must mean that the categories of capital aren’t really applicable here." "I am endorsing the view that there are some common interests and needs that people have across cultures."

Hans bok: Postcapitalism is published by Allen Lane on 30 July.
"Postcapitalism is possible because of three major changes information technology has brought about in the past 25 years. First, it has reduced the need for work, blurred the edges between work and free time and loosened the relationship between work and wages. The coming wave of automation, currently stalled because our social infrastructure cannot bear the consequences, will hugely diminish the amount of work needed – not just to subsist but to provide a decent life for all."
"By creating millions of networked people, financially exploited but with the whole of human intelligence one thumb-swipe away, info-capitalism has created a new agent of change in history: the educated and connected human being."
