XOXO (eXtensible Open XHTML Outlines) is an XML microformat for outlines built on top of XHTML. Developed by several authors as an attempt to reuse XHTML building blocks instead of inventing unnecessary new XML elements/attributes, XOXO is based on existing conventions for publishing outlines, lists, and blogrolls on the Web. The XOXO specification defines an outline as a hierarchical, ordered list of arbitrary elements. The specification is fairly open which makes it suitable for many types of list data. E.g. the more semantic version of the S5 presentation file format is based upon XOXO.
In this talk, Jonathan Zittrain made proposes that the seemingly lost human kindness has blossomed on the internet. The talk starts with the basic infrastructure of the internet, all the way to the simple but brilliant ideas of information sharing, to explain the act of kindness of human. This differs from ratings on amazon in that it is proactive and conscious actions of internet users who give and pass on favors.
One web page for every book ever published. It's a lofty, but achievable, goal. To build it, we need hundreds of millions of book records, a brand new database infrastructure for handling huge amounts of dynamic information, a wiki interface, multi-language support, and people who are willing to contribute their time, effort, and book data. To date, we have gathered about 30 million records (20 million are available through the site now), and more are on the way. We have built the database infrastructure and the wiki interface, and you can search millions of book records, narrow results by facet, and search across the full text of 1 million scanned books.
People have this delusion that the Web is a fount of all information. That, if you look hard enough with Google and other search engines, you can find all the answers. That’s crap.
