D. Mrdeža Antonina, Similarities and Differences in the Discourse of Travelogues by Antun Vrančić and Marc Antonio Pigafetta

Description

Sažetak izlaganja na skupu u Zadru 2012: The paper analyzes the discursive level of spatial perception, mental imagery and emotional relation towards the recorder’s/narrator’s observations and reflections in the travelogues by two 16th century humanist writers: Antun Vrančić (1504 - 1573) from Šibenik, a Hungarian diplomat and Primate, and Marc Antonio Pigafetta from Vicenza, a relative of the famous travel writer Antonio Pigafetta, in the service of King Maximilian II, who was a companion to Antun Vrančić in the second diplomatic mission. Vrančić is the author of an unfinished travelogue about the first diplomatic mission to Turkey, Iter Buda Hadrianopolim anno 1553 ... (first published by Abb. Fortis in Viaggio in Dalmazia, Venice 1774), and Pigafetta is the author of a travelogue about the second mission in the same geographic region: Itinerario di Marc' Antonio Pigafetta, gentilhuomo vincentino, Wolfio Inghlese, London 1585. Discourse is first analyzed on the textual level, followed by its relation to historical practice and the social role of travelogues, and finally within the socio-historical and socio-cultural context.
