Transition between Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) and Adult Mental Health Services (AMHS) can be stressful for the young person and family alike. Previous reviews have focused on specific aspects of transition or perspectives of young people, or have not used systematic approaches to data identification and analysis. There is well-established evidence that Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) training improves knowledge about how to support someone developing a mental health problem, but less evidence that this support improves the mental health of the recipient of aid. This randomised controlled trial aimed to assess the long-term effects of MHFA training of parents on the mental health of their adolescent children.

The primary outcomes from this study of psychotherapy for young people with bipolar disorder identified that most participants had continued to remain well. MH:2K is a powerful youth-led programme which relies on the views of young people to shape the support and services available to them.
The innovative project, which has piloted in Oldham, sees local 14-25 year olds become ‘Citizen Researchers’, identifying the most important mental health challenges facing local young people, engaging with their peers on these topics and then working with key local decision-makers to make recommendations for change.

Client engagement in services is a critical element of effective community-based child and family mental health service delivery. Caregiver engagement is particularly important, as caregivers often serve as gatekeepers to child mental health care and typically must consent for services, facilitate service attendance, and are often the target of intervention themselves. Unfortunately, caregiver engagement has been identified as a significant challenge in community-based child mental health services. To address this gap, the Parent And Caregiver Active Participation Toolkit (PACT), which includes therapist training and participation tools for caregivers and therapists, was developed. A programme funded by NHS health and care quality improvement organisation Advancing Quality Alliance offered them the opportunity to take part in People’s Voice Media’s Community Reporter Programme which gives people a platform to have a voice and to challenge perceptions about their communities.
Supported by Knowsley CAMHS consultants Dr Tessa Myatt and Dr Marian Catalan, the teenagers worked together to produce a video focusing on their personal experiences of CAMHS, how they feel about the transition to adult services and any improvements they would like to see.
