Psychological Trauma: Theory, Research, Practice, and Policy (Apr 8, 2019). DOI:10.1037/tra0000457
Background: Childhood trauma is associated with the development of depression during adolescence. Prior research suggests that traumatic experiences may result in differential acute treatment outcomes for depressed adolescents. However, the long-term effects of trauma on treatment response remain unclear.. To read the full article, log in using your NHS OpenAthens details.
Children are more likely to suffer Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) if they think their reaction to traumatic events is not ‘normal’ – according to new research from the University of East Anglia.
Worked carried out in collaboration with Cambridgeshire and Peterborough NHS Foundation Trust has revealed that while most children recover well after a traumatic event, some go on to develop PTSD that may stay with them for months, years, or even into adulthood.

Youth are commonly exposed to potentially traumatic events (PTEs). Following exposure, approximately 25% develop persistent mental and behavioral health (M/BH) symptoms, yet many go untreated or are misdiagnosed and suffer adverse outcomes. Primary care is an ideal setting for detection of trauma-related symptoms. The current article uses archival data to (1) examine the prevalence of posttraumatic stress symptoms that are unlikely, possible, and likely to meet diagnostic criteria for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and the M/BH and physical health concerns that co-occur with PTSD symptoms among adolescents (n = 133, mean age = 15.1 years, 67% female, 60% White) referred for brief, integrated M/BH services within primary care and (2) identify the prevalence of referred adolescents with elevated symptoms of PTSD that would not be identified for services by traditional depression screening.. MRC-funded research from King’s College London suggests one in 13 young people in the UK have had post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) before reaching age 18. The first UK-based study of its kind, published in The Lancet Psychiatry, found 31% of young people had a traumatic experience during childhood, and those who were exposed to trauma were twice as likely as their peers to have a range of mental health disorders.

Objective: Exposure to childhood trauma is particularly prevalent among incarcerated juveniles. Although there is a growing understanding of the detrimental impact trauma exposure can have on child and adolescent development, childhood maltreatment can be very difficult to accurately measure. Integration of self-report trauma histories as well as supplemental file reports of trauma exposure may provide the most accurate estimate of experienced trauma among youth in correctional settings.. Objective: Sexual abuse experienced in childhood and adolescence is associated with severity of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depressive symptoms, and emotion regulation difficulties. The current study examined the relationships among these factors in a sample of adolescents with sexual abuse-related PTSD. It was hypothesized that (a) self-perceived emotion regulation difficulties would predict severity of PTSD and depressive symptoms, and that (b) depressive symptoms would mediate the relationship between emotion regulation difficulties and PTSD.. Traumatized youth are at an increased risk of a host of negative academic and psychoeducational outcomes. Screening and identification of students who experience potentially traumatic events may help schools provide support to at-risk students. In light of this, the current study examines the availability and use of trauma screening measures to detect early indicators of risk among youth in schools.. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is common among children and adolescents who are exposed to trauma, and it is often associated with significant negative impacts on their psychosocial functioning and quality of life. Many types of psychotherapies have been found to be effective for PTSD in children and adolescents. However, due to the lack of direct comparisons between different psychotherapies, the hierarchy of treatment efficacy is still unclear. Therefore, we plan to conduct a systematic review and network meta-analysis to evaluate the efficacy and acceptability of various types of psychotherapies for PTSD in children and adolescents.

Youth who engage in animal cruelty are known to be at increased risk of perpetrating violence on other people in their lives including peers, loved ones, and elder family members. These youths have often been exposed to family violence, including animal cruelty perpetrated on their beloved pets by violent adults. The current study utilizes a data set of 81,000 juvenile offenders whose adverse childhood experiences are known and includes 466 youth who self-report engaging in animal cruelty.. Trauma-related sleep difficulties are quite common and their functional and clinical importance are increasingly recognized. High rates of sleep problems have been documented among trauma-exposed adults, particularly those diagnosed with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD); however, research with trauma-exposed children is relatively limited. Research specifically with child samples is critical due to the numerous developmental and functional implications that may result from sleep impairment. Characteristics of the traumatic event may play a key role in understanding sleep difficulties, yet, these associations are not well understood among trauma-exposed children.. Psychological Trauma: Theory, Research, Practice, and Policy9.3(May 2017): 390-398.
Objective: Childhood exposure to trauma, including violence and abuse, is a major public health concern that has resulted in increased efforts to promote trauma-informed child-serving systems. Trauma screening is an important component of such trauma-informed systems, yet widespread use of trauma screening is rare in part due to the lack of brief, validated trauma screening measures for children. We describe development and validation of the Child Trauma Screen (CTS), a 10-item screening measure of trauma exposure and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms for children consistent with the DSM–5 definition of PTSD. In this editorial, we discuss Morina and colleagues' meta-analysis of psychological therapies for youth with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression following conflict. Recent years have seen significantly more randomised controlled trial evidence addressing the needs of this population. More work is needed to understand post-traumatic depression, dissemination, timing of intervention and whether trauma-focused interventions are essential. Young children may experience post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) for years without it being recognized by their parents, according to new research from the University of East Anglia. Researchers followed more than 100 children aged between two and 10 who had been involved in a road accident -- either in a car crash, hit as a pedestrian, or knocked off their bike. All had been taken to A&E with varying injuries, including bruising, fracture or loss of consciousness. The study, published in the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry, found children showing signs of stress soon after a trauma will not necessarily go on to suffer PTSD after three years, but a minority develop PTSD that persists for years. Objectives: Identifying the factors related to premature termination from trauma-focused child therapy is an important first step in ultimately preventing attrition in at-risk families. The primary aim of the present study was to investigate whether demographic factors and pretreatment symptom levels were associated with premature termination among children who received trauma-focused treatment. Because different definitions of attrition may influence results, candidate factors were examined in relation to 2 operational definitions of attrition. Traumatology: An International Journal22.3 (Sep 2016): 174-183.
Recent scholarship on traumatic stress has suggested that particular types of traumatic stressors may result in different patterns of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms. Specifically, traumatic stressors that are interpersonal and involve betrayal have been found to be particularly detrimental to youths’ psychological functioning. In addition, the extent to which youth experience emotion dysregulation (ED) has been demonstrated to mediate the association between betrayal trauma and PTSD. However, research has yet to disentangle whether betrayal trauma impacts specific facets of ED and PTSD symptoms. Elucidating the specific connections between these constructs is important to our understanding of the impact of betrayal trauma on youth development, and could aid in the development of more targeted interventions for traumatized youth. Thus, the current study sought to examine whether facets of ED mediated the association between traumatic experiences characterized by betrayal versus nonbetrayal and PTSD, and whether these associations were consistent across gender. International Journal of Play Therapy25.3 (Jul 2016): 166-174.
This qualitative study describes a successful 5-month pediatric treatment for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) arising from a single incident trauma. Treatment was conceptualized through the adaptive information processing model and the use of eye movement desensitization and reprocessing integrated with child-centered play therapy, supported with family therapy and cognitive–behavioral strategies. When 51⁄2 years old, the client experienced a tornado while separated from his mother and twin sister at a theme park. He developed significant symptoms of PTSD and developmental regression not present prior to the incident. Subsequent treatment from several providers and medications targeting symptoms were unsuccessful. This treatment, 1 year posttrauma, resulted in the resolution of his PTSD symptoms, reestablishment of pretraumatized development trajectory, and recovery to age-appropriate expectations and growth sustained 3 years posttrauma.
