Abstract

Especially in urban areas, mobility concepts that only take into account individual modes of transport are reaching spatial and ecological limits 6. In this regard, the linkage of individual modes of transport in form of intermodal services is considered as sustainable alternative. However, Current intermodal approaches are usually designed for local population. Since urban tourism shows high growth rates with a private transport share of nearly 70\%, touristic traffic does not represent an underestimated proportion of urban traffic 3. For this reason, within the "FREE" research project, an intermodal service especially for urban tourists will be developed, which will be bookable together with accommodations, arrivals and departures in the pre-trip phase of the journey. To support tourists during trips in foreign environments, an application for mobile devices will also be developed. To provide a requirements framework as part of a user-centred design process according to DIN EN ISO 9241-210 12, 26 mobile applications (public transport, bike- and car sharing and intermodal services) and 12 web-based booking systems (providing the reservation of accommodations together with arrival and departure options) were analysed concerning their functional standard and usability. It was found that web-based booking systems provide uniformed templates for booking processes of accommodations, arrival and departure modules. In terms of further bookings no consistent pattern was found. For mobile applications, it was found that in addition to functions concerning orientation and navigation, the purchase of tickets respectively the reservation of vehicles is provided. To support the user in the mobile context of use, context-sensitive reminder and notification features are also provided. With the analysis of user feedback could be determined that today’s systems show negative impact on user-experience by providing unreliable real-time information and by access to personal user data. To take into account the touristic background of "FREE", furthermore a persona based scenario workshop with 9 experts (3 tourism experts, 3 traffic planners, 2 human factors experts and one provider of rental bikes) was conducted. The findings uncovered that in contrast to current intermodal systems, a touristic approach should supply uniformed access to all modes of transport as well as predefined routes linked with touristic sights.
