Zusammenfassung

The primary purpose of this study was to ascertain which set of foundation characteristics enabled one to differentiate givers from nongivers. Included in this study were fifty foundations which had given \$5,000 or more to Cumberland College and fifty foundations randomly sampled which were also solicited but which did not give to Cumberland College. Aperture cards containing the Internal Revenue Service form 990 for each of the one hundred foundations were purchased from the Foundation Center. Data were extracted from the aperture cards. Through the employment of hierarchical analysis and dummy coding each known foundation characteristic identified by expert opinion as being somewhat predictive was assigned a predetermined score of one or zero. The multiple regression technique was employed to predict the dependent variable based on nine selected independent variables. This technique also allowed examination of the relationship between the dependent variable and each independent variable through partial-regression coefficients. Because the collected data on the variables were dichotomous the phi coefficient technique, the simplified computational equivalent of the product moment for use with dichotomous data was employed. The accepted level of significance for rejection of the null hypotheses was at the .05 level of significance, (VBAR)r(VBAR) (GREATERTHEQ) .205. This statistical method identified patterns of variables which indicated a significant relationship to giving to Cumberland College. This study indicated that larger foundations give more awards and are more likely to include Cumberland College in their giving than foundations with smaller assets. The study also indicated that general purpose foundations are more likely to include Cumberland. When the variables: giving to other Kentucky institutions, giving to other workstudy institutions, giving to other liberal arts institutions, and giving to other Baptist institutions are added to a foundation's giving profile, there appears to be an excellent possibility this foundation will include Cumberland College on its award list. By using the procedures as outlined in this study, other institutions which have available similar data can conduct a comparable study to determine similar sources of potential foundation support for themselves.
