Abstract
Informative texts are currently filling an increasingly important social function. More professionals are thus questioning how specialized information should be transferred to a non-expert audience. This article defines the genre of fact sheets for patients and uses practical examples extracted from a corpus of fact sheets in English and Spanish to analyze determinologization procedures which translators and medical writers may use to ensure effective communication in patient-oriented documents.
