Economic Implications of the U.s.-Asean Discourse on Human Rights

Abstract

The human rights discourse between the U.S. and ASEAN countries incorporates an exaggerated view of differences in human rights principles and practices. This division within the United States policy community between pragmatists and idealists (and at times between the administration and Congress) is a familiar quest of many politicians for a middle ground satisfactory to all sides.
