It presents various diagnostic methods that have been tried by a few utilities and laboratories and shows some of the results obtained. The diagnostic techniques that have been evaluated are only concerned with the electrical performance of the composite insulators. No diagnostic method meant to evaluate the mechanical performance of these insulators has been considered. It is nevertheless useful to indicate that certain type of electrical degradation may lead to the degradation of the mechanical properties of the composite insulators.
