Abstract

In this paper we examine the dependence of the reflection points on the velocity model for multi-component OBC datasets. The effects considered are important both for coverage analysis during survey planning and for correct imaging of acquired data. Whilst this is most obvious for the converted waves, it may also be important for P-wave energy when the water depth is significant, in which case the CMP assumption becomes suspect even for flat layers. An important parameter is the Vs/Vp ratio which ratio is conventionally called gamma (gamma). The effects on the common conversion point (CCP) of anisotropy, target depth, and sea bed depth, can be approximated as an adjustment of g. We call the more general parameter gammaCCP. We propose a new method for the estimation of gammaCCP. Our method is based upon converted wave stacking trajectories. The method, which is applied to prestack data, maximizes a coherency function (usually semblance) varying the effective gammaCCP parameter.
