THE OPTIMUM USE OF CONTROLLED BACKFILLS FOR UNDERGROUND ELECTRIC CABLES

, , , and .
(1980)

Abstract

This communication deals with the use of controlled backfills for laying underground cables . This technique has certain advantages, but implies the following, among others : - achieving a reliable method of dimensioning the trenches, - research into and characterisation of convenient materials, - determining practical working conditions, - the use of suitable methods of inspection on site. The solution to these problems adopted in Belgium has been considered adequate for systematic use of controlled backfills when the voltage and load on the underground cables are high. However, the results of more precise calculations show that the question must be reexamined taking into account the new data available on the drying out of soils.
