Abstract
Insulator contamination severity has
been e~tensively measured on 66, 220 and
500-kV lines installed in desert areas.
The process of natural wetting of insulators
in the desert has been studied by analysing
the relevant meteorological data
over a period of five years.
The severity, chemical and grain-size
characteristics of the pollution resulting
from sandstorms are distinguished from
normal desert pollution. Strings of insulators with conven-tional
and semiconducting glazes polluted in
the desert have been tested in the labora~,
tory under various test conditions. Insulator wetting, d~sert pollution,
sandstorms, insulator strings, semiconducting
glaze.
