глава Perspectives of Belief Revision in Document-driven Evolution of Ontology, стр. 11. Springer, (2007)

Аннотация

Current trends in research point at ontologies as a way to represent information in a structured way, thus facilitating more precise querying and question answering. In a classical approach, ontologies represent a static world. Any change in the world requires a manual update of ontology what is not adequate for the fast changing business environment. On the one hand, manual modification of ontology is time-consuming and sometimes not prompt enough. On the other hand, ontology that is not up to date has little value since it does not describe the world properly. Therefore, when considering business domain, developing methodologies for automatic ontology evolution is crucial. One of the solutions to the above mentioned problem could be maintenance by means of extracting changes from everyday business news that reflects changes in the world. Still the problem of incorporating the changes into current ontology remains. One of the approaches is belief revision, developed for past two decades, which studies processes and operations required to update a knowledge base when new fact is added. Nevertheless, in the evolution of ontology we also wish to bind changes to time, where changes are extracted from text with natural language processing techniques. In our system, time is considered as one of the dimensions that organizes information. It orders the changes in the ontology, allows checking the validity of the facts in time and verifying consistency of ontology in time. As a result a consistent ontology for an arbitrary moment in time is maintained.
