Abstract

Here, the authors determine thermodynamic properties of pyrochlore spin-ice compounds at subkelvin temperatures. In particular, the magnetic field dependence of the heat capacity and magnetic entropy of Ho$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ and Pr$_2$Hf$_2$O$_7$ shows the existence of additional states beyond the electronic spin and orbital degrees of freedom. One can understand the data through the presence of hyperfine states and complex hyperfine-coupled term schemes.
