Abstract

With growing power demand and increasing concern about the use of fossil fuels in conventional power plant in future, the renewable energy power generation is gaining greater importance across the globe in effectively meeting the growing power demand. In the renewable power generation, the microgrid integrates distributed generation (DGs) of capacity ranging from few KW to MW at the load sites, instead of traditional generator units that are located far away from loads where the natural resources are available. The present paper focus on super- capacitor as a new energy storage device and that appears to be one of the best choices for the microgrid. The super capacitor energy storage in the microgrid not only combines the feature of best energy storage element but can also improve the power quality of microgrid; balances the micro sources output and plays an important role on the economic performance of microgrid. It can be combined as a battery -super capacitor hybrid storage that shows longer run time and higher power capability compared to a battery alone under load condition. The characteristics and performance of super capacitor energy storage system and its application in the microgrid to promote technological progresses and achieve greater economic benefits is focused.
