Abstract
Algorithms and proposals for analyzing the energy consumption of sensor nodes often assume that transmission costs scale with a power of the distance. While this assumption is theoretically correct, it does not reflect the capabilities of real sensor nodes. Moreover, the omni-directional nature of radio transmissions which forces nodes to overhear the communication of other nodes is ignored by this approach. We therefore propose a novel and more realistic cost metric based on the current consumptions of existing sensor nodes that also includes increased energy consumption when processing unintendedly received packets.
