Mechanical performance requirements of composite insulator with high SML used for UHV overhead line

, , , and . (2007)

Abstract

It has been decided that composite insulator with high mechanical ratings (high SML) will be largely used in the first lOOOkV UHV AC demonstration project in China. Therefore high mechanical petformance is required for composite insulator. At present standards, composite insulator's long-term mechanical performance is tested by three insulators to withstand 60% MAv for 96 h. It is based on different types of end fittings many years ago. Test results on crimped composite insulators show that both deviation of mechanical failure load and slope of creepage are much better than previous insulators. It means that the present test requirement is no longer suitable for the purpose of selecting excellent crimped composite insulators for the very important UHV line. The time-load characteristics of crimped composite insulators from several manufactures with high SML are tested. And then a new design principle of mechanical properties of composite insulator is suggested, and a higher test requirement is also suggested at the same time.
