This paper discusses the problems of the switching surges overvoltages and their impact on the project of
UHV systems, paying special attention to possible means for their limitation.
With reference to some possible lay-outs of the future UHV italian network, a huge set of calculations has
been perfonned to detennine the levels of switching surge overvoltages generated under various conditions (fault
application, single-phase and three-phase reclosure, line energization etc.).
Starting from the overvoltages previously calculated, the risk of insulation failure of the line has been
detennined for different values of 50 percent discharge voltage of tower insulation to switching impulse.
The papers gives also some information concerning the project of the future UHV system, in particular as
regards the use of opening and closing resistors, earth-breakers, single or three-phase reclosure, and shunt reactors.
