Abstract

In recent years much attention has been given to the design of high voltage insulators and the search for suitable materials for reliable operation under contamination conditions. This included the introduction of aerodynamic profiles and insulators m:znufactured from synthetic materials such as epoxy resin and silicon rubber. In the present work 16 different insulator types were tested under natural pollution conditions in the desert, in order to compare the developed insulators with the conventional ones of common use. Insulators were exposed to desert pollution for a pen'od of 3 years. The effects of natural rain washing and selfcleaning by wind were carefully examined. The obtained information is used to reach conclusions on the quantitative effect of the insulators parameters such as the shed inclination angle, shape and diameter on the performance and selfcleaning ability. The conclusions reached through this investigation are useful for both insulator manufacturers and transmission line designers.
