Abstract

During the reign of the Vandals as well as after the Reconquista by the East Roman Empire the North African Church proved to be remarkably resilient. Although Iustinians' territorial reconquest of North Africa was successful, his attempt of reconciliation between the Miaphysite Orient and the Chalcedonensian Occident must be regarded as having failed. The striving for autonomy of the North African Church can be seen as one example for the fact, that neither the Vandalic repression nor the Emperors' commitment in the field of the religious rebalancing between east and west were able to break with this „traditional confidence“.
