More and more transmission lines (TLs) were constructed in the residential area, and some of
them were much closer to the residential buildings. Some old built TLs are complained for the
disturbance of the electric field and its effects. The environment of the residential areas near
the TLs is a focus in the construction of the electric transmission projects in China. Two
methods are introduced in the paper to restrain the electric field. One is "passive", another is
äctive", according to the conductors energized or not in the shielding. The choice of the
methods depends on subjective considerations and on the selection of the admissible field in
the area to be shielded. Also in different phase of the project, different measures can be used.
while the project has been put into operation, shielding wires may be the economic way to
reduce the field. Then the calculation method of the electric field near the TLs without or with
the shielding wires is produced, which is a simple and useful one- equivalent charge
formulation. And two different configurations passive shielding methods are given. Several
horizontal wires at ground potential placed at a certain height above the ground and parallel to
the TLs' conductors provide an effective shield of the electric field caused by the UHV TL for
the area under or very near to the TLs in some special areas. Several vertical placed wires
parallel to and placed outside the TL conductors can reduction of the ground level electric
fields off the edge of a TL right-of-way. The shielded result are analysed, and the shield
measures have been put into operation to solve the complaint of the people near the TLs.
Some other restrain methods are introduced briefly and some advices to optimize the
calculation are given.
