Three kinematical patterns of failure have been observed : - at shallow depth, the extraction of the plates gives rise to an uplift of the soil on the front and to a sinking on the back, and the failure lines reach the ground surface ; - at medium depth, only the zone subjected to uplift reaches the ground surface ; - finally, at great depth, soil deformations remain localised around the plates. The solution of the theoretical failure patterns i.e. of "passive-active pressures" for shallow and medium depths, and of "circular paths" for great depths leads to the calculation of the uplift strength of an anchor plate as unction of its dimensions (length and width). of its position (depth and inclination) and of the mechanical soil properties (cohesion, angle of friction and unit mass). The theoretical results were checked experimentally on 74 actual tests in different soil types. Practically, the results show: - that the uplift strength of an anchor plate increases with the depth and the slope; - that the average uplift stress decreases with an increase in the ratio of the length to the width of the plate, which means that a square plate should be prefe"ed to a rectangular one.
