An update on open source ILS

. Computers in Libraries, vol.27, no.3, pp.27-29, 27 (3): 27-29 (March 2007)

Abstract

Looks at the latest updates on open source integrated library systems, some of which have emerged to challenge the commercial offerings. Presents an overview of open source software and describes three projects that bolstered the prospects of the open source integrated library systems. One such project involves the transition of the PINES consortium in Georgia from a commercial system, SirsiDynix Unicorn, to a system named Evergreen which has been released as an open source for other libraries to use. Another project is Koha, the first full-featured open source integrated library system that was first implemented at the Nelsonville Public Library in Athens County, Ohio in late 2002. Learning Access Institute, a Seattle-based nonprofit organization, is also involved in library automation based on open source software. (Quotes from original text)
